The Tennessee Aquarium and Fairyland Elementary School Bluebird Project

In 1996, exciting things began happening on Lookout Mountain that have forged a successful and lasting partnership between Lula Lake Land Trust, the Tennessee Aquarium and the fifth grade students at Fairyland Elementary school! It all began as an idea that led to a plan put together by Susie Grant, Tennessee Aquarium educator, and Jane Yonts, Fairyland School teacher, to take advantage of the amazing outdoor classroom provided by the land trust. Our goal was to teach students about environmental issues and conservation with a focus on the eastern bluebird. The students readily embraced the program and made it their own. The experiment in hands-on, student-based learning was an immediate success generating excitement and learning for all individuals involved. The project has just finished its 12th year.

A visit to the Lula Lake Land Trust at the beginning of each school year introduces new fifth graders to the project. The vast study area allows them to see firsthand the work of previous classes as they study birdhouses placed by earlier classes. We discuss the process of conducting complete and accurate data collection, the survival needs of a species, and ways to continue helping our target species, the eastern bluebird. Through experiential learning, students begin to recognize the crucial importance and value of places like Lula Lake, inspiring the protection of natural resources.

Ways to Participate

Participation by the local community is one way that a land trust can effectively achieve its goals. We offer many ways for people of all ages to get involved. Whether you just want a nice place to stroll around on a Saturday, or you are looking to give back to the land a little of what it has provided for you, we encourage you to get out and join us for an open day or one of our volunteer opportunities.

During the summer months, the LLLT will be open on the following dates:

From the Desk of Katherine Eddins, Executive Director

We are just a month or so away from signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Georgia Department of Natural
Resources (GA DNR) about the trail we have constructed from Nickajack Road to Cloudland Canyon State Park. The Memorandum will allow GA DNR to operate the trail providing 6 miles of hiking, horse back and mountain bike riding opportunities. We are currently putting the finishing touches on the trail: staff, local volunteers and local contractors have all participated in building the trail and bridges. We cannot wait for you to see and enjoy this great resource.

If you want to visit the core property, now is the time. The spring flowers are in the middle of their blooming glory, the trees are light green and there is lots of water going over the falls and flowing down the creek. I hope to see you there.
